How to Choose a WordPress Developer in 2026
Choosing the right WordPress developer is one of the most important decisions you will make when building or improving your business website.
A visually attractive website is not enough. It should also be fast, responsive, secure, easy to manage, search-engine friendly and designed around your business goals. The developer you hire can influence website performance, user experience, online sales and long-term maintenance.
WordPress offers flexible themes, plugins and publishing tools, but creating a professional business website still requires careful planning and technically sound implementation. You can review the
official WordPress features
to understand the platform’s core capabilities.
Quick Answer: How Do You Choose a WordPress Developer?
Choose a developer who understands your business objectives, has relevant WordPress experience, can show genuine project work and follows a clear development process.
- Review relevant WordPress projects and live websites.
- Check mobile responsiveness and performance knowledge.
- Confirm the project scope, timeline and revision process.
- Ask how security, backups and SEO will be handled.
- Confirm website ownership and post-launch support.
What Does a WordPress Developer Do?
A WordPress developer builds, customizes, improves and maintains websites using WordPress. Depending on the project, the developer may handle website architecture, theme customization, Elementor development, WooCommerce setup, responsive design, plugin configuration, speed optimization, migration, security and technical SEO.

1. Define Your Website Goals Before Hiring
Before contacting a developer, identify what the website should accomplish. A developer cannot recommend the right solution without understanding the purpose of the project.
- Do you need a new website or a redesign?
- Is your goal to generate leads, sell products or accept bookings?
- Who is your target audience?
- Which pages, forms and integrations do you need?
- Do you already have branding, content and images?
- What are your expected timeline and budget range?
A professional developer should ask about your business and customers before recommending a theme, builder or plugin.
2. Look for Relevant WordPress Experience
General web-development knowledge is valuable, but it does not always prove strong WordPress expertise. A qualified developer should understand:
- WordPress installation and configuration
- Themes, child themes and templates
- Elementor or the WordPress block editor
- Responsive layouts
- Forms and email delivery
- Plugins and compatibility
- Security, backups and updates
- Performance optimization
- HTML, CSS, JavaScript and basic PHP concepts

3. Review the Developer’s Portfolio Carefully
A portfolio should demonstrate more than attractive screenshots. Look at how each website performs as a complete business tool.
- Desktop and mobile design quality
- Navigation and content structure
- Page-loading experience
- Forms and conversion elements
- Product or service presentation
- Consistency across different pages
- Real live website URLs where available

4. Understand Website Design and Development
Website design and development are connected, but they solve different parts of the project.
Website design focuses on:
Layout, colour, typography, visual hierarchy, branding, user journey and calls to action.
Website development focuses on:
WordPress configuration, functionality, responsive behaviour, forms, integrations, performance and security.

5. Check Mobile Responsiveness and Accessibility
Your website should be usable on desktop computers, tablets and smartphones. Mobile responsiveness involves more than shrinking a desktop layout.
- Readable font sizes
- Touch-friendly buttons
- Simple mobile navigation
- Responsive images and tables
- Easy-to-complete forms
- Correct spacing and content order
Accessibility should also be considered during development. The
W3C accessibility introduction
explains why websites should support users with different abilities, devices and browsing conditions.
6. Evaluate Website Speed Knowledge
A slow website can frustrate visitors and reduce enquiries or sales. A skilled developer should understand common performance problems such as:
- Oversized images
- Too many plugins
- Unoptimized fonts
- Heavy page-builder elements
- Poor caching
- Slow hosting
- Unnecessary third-party scripts
Google provides
Core Web Vitals guidance
for evaluating loading performance, responsiveness and visual stability.
7. Confirm Basic SEO Knowledge
A website developer does not always replace a complete SEO specialist, but the website should be built on a search-friendly technical foundation.
- Logical heading structure
- Clean and readable URLs
- SEO titles and meta descriptions
- Image alt text
- Contextual internal links
- XML sitemap and robots settings
- Canonical URLs and redirects
- Schema markup and indexability
Google recommends creating useful and people-first content instead of content designed mainly to manipulate rankings. Read the
official helpful-content guidance.

8. Choose the Right Developer for WooCommerce
An ecommerce website requires more planning than a basic informational website. A WooCommerce developer may need to configure:
- Products and variations
- Inventory and categories
- Payments, taxes and shipping
- Checkout and customer accounts
- Order emails and coupons
- Analytics and store security
The
official WooCommerce documentation
covers the connected areas involved in managing an online store.

9. Check Figma-to-WordPress Experience
When a website design already exists in Figma, the developer must convert that design into a responsive, functional and manageable WordPress website.
- Review the Figma design and reusable components.
- Plan desktop, tablet and mobile behaviour.
- Build the layouts in WordPress.
- Optimize fonts and images.
- Configure forms and interactions.
- Test responsiveness and browser compatibility.
- Complete performance and quality checks.

10. Decide Whether You Need a Redesign
You may not need to replace your entire website. A redesign may be appropriate when the existing website has:
- An outdated appearance
- Poor mobile usability
- Confusing navigation
- Slow loading
- Weak calls to action
- Broken functionality
- Poor conversion performance

11. Ask About the Development Process
A clear process reduces delays, unexpected costs and communication problems.
- Discovery: Understand the business, audience, goals and functionality.
- Planning: Confirm the sitemap, features and project scope.
- Design: Prepare or approve the page layouts.
- Development: Build the website and configure the required features.
- Testing: Test responsiveness, forms, links and performance.
- Launch: Publish the website and complete final checks.
- Support: Resolve agreed post-launch issues and provide guidance.
12. Clarify Pricing, Scope and Ownership
A professional proposal should clearly explain:
- Number of pages and features
- Design and content responsibilities
- Plugin and licence costs
- Revisions and project timeline
- Hosting, maintenance and support
- Payment schedule and exclusions
You should also confirm who will own the domain, hosting account, WordPress access, analytics accounts, backups and premium licences after the project is completed.
